MHA launches e-Zero FIR initiative

In order to curb cybercrime and speed up the investigation process, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) launched e-Zero FIR initiative in Delhi. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), which functions under the MHA, has introduced this system which will automatically convert a cyber fraud of over Rs 10 lakh, for which a complaint has been registered on the 1930 helpline or cybercrime portal, into an FIR. This is expected fasten the investigation and nabbing of criminals.

About the e-Zero FIR

  • This has been launched as a pilot project in Delhi and will soon be implemented across the country.
  • It will integrate I4C’s National Cybercrime Reporting Portal system, Delhi Police’s e-FIR system, and the NCRB’s Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems, empowering citizens to lodge a complaint.
  • This will help victims recover the amount lost quickly while enhancing the ease of investigation.

What is a Cybercrime

  • Any unlawful activity conducted through computer or any digital communication devices falls under the category of cybercrime.
  • It involves monetary as well as non-monetary crimes, including Child Pornography OR Child sexually abusive material (CSAM), cyber bullying, cyber stalking, cyber grooming, online job fraud, online sextortion, phishing, vishing, smishing, sexting, credit card fraud, spamming, ransomware, etc.
  • Cybercrime has emerged as a serious challenge for authorities. The spread of smartphone and internet has made people highly vulnerable to cybercrime.

Measures to Tackle the Challenge

  • Cybercrime and Security Awareness: Despite the reach of internet and smartphone, the awareness regarding cybercrime and related security measures is very low in the country. There is an urgent need to raise awareness to reduce the success of cyberattacks.
  • Robust Data Protection: Data is a powerful assent in today’s digitalised world. India has made Data Protection Law in 2019 to ensure that data are used for public good only. However, people unaware of the power of data often share it on public platforms that is utilised for nefarious purposes. Awareness about data sharing must be ensured.

Government’s Initiatives

  • The government recognises the seriousness of cybercrime and has taken several measures to tackle the menace.
  • The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (14C) has been established with the aim to tackle all types of cybercrime committed across the country.
  • The National Cyber Forensic Laboratory supports investigative agencies and officials in their investigation.
  • The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal allows common people to report crimes. It especially emphasises crimes conducted against women and children, who are the most vulnerable sections.
  • In addition, there are some other initiatives, including CyTrain Portal, Cybercrime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC) Scheme, Police Modernisation, etc. that effectively monitor crime and facilitate efforts to combat the crime.
