The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has crossed a major milestone, with more than 10 crore 33 lakh free LPG connections distributed to beneficiaries across India.
About the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)
- The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a flagship scheme launched in 2016 by the Government of India to provide clean cooking fuel (LPG) to women from below poverty line (BPL) households. The initiative aims to reduce health hazards caused by traditional fuels like firewood and dung cakes, while empowering women and improving their quality of life.
- Under the scheme, free LPG connections are provided along with initial refills and a stove. The scheme plays a key role in promoting energy access, gender equality, and environmental sustainability.
Socio-Economic Impact
- The scheme has brought tangible health benefits, reducing the risk of respiratory diseases caused by indoor air pollution.
- It has also contributed to women’s empowerment, saving time spent collecting firewood and enabling greater participation in education and income-generating activities.
- The government also provides subsidies for LPG refills to make the continued use of gas more affordable for low-income families.
National Progress
- With over 10.33 crore connections distributed, the scheme has reached every state and Union Territory, making it one of the largest clean fuel distribution initiatives in the world.
- Beneficiaries are identified using the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) data, ensuring that the support reaches those who need it most.
Continued Support and Expansion
- Under Ujjwala 2.0, the government introduced additional benefits including a free first refill and hotplate along with the connection.
- The scheme remains a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and plays a crucial role in advancing the vision of a cleaner and healthier India.
