About RAW

  • The Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) is India’s primary external intelligence agency, established in 1968 after the Indo-Pak war of 1965.
  • Operating under the Cabinet Secretariat, RAW reports directly to the Prime Minister of India. Its main responsibilities include gathering external intelligence, counter-terrorism, monitoring political and military developments in neighboring countries, and promoting India’s strategic interests abroad.
  • RAW played a crucial role during key historical events such as the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, Kargil conflict, and countering cross-border terrorism.
  • The agency also monitors threats from global terror outfits and keeps an eye on China and Pakistan’s geopolitical maneuvers.
  • RAW operates covertly, and its internal functioning remains classified, with no public accountability mechanism like other government bodies. It is widely regarded as a critical component of India’s national security architecture.

About Operation Sindoor

  • Operation Sindoor was launched by India in the early hours of May 7, 2025, in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilians.
  • The coordinated military campaign, carried out by the Army, Air Force, and Navy, targeted nine key terrorist facilities belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen across Pakistan and Pakistan‑occupied Kashmir.
  • The strikes reportedly neutralised around 80 to 100 militants, including senior operatives.
  • The name “Sindoor,” referencing the vermilion of married women, served as a symbolic gesture honoring widows of the Pahalgam victims.
  • Operation Sindoor marked one of the swiftest and most decisive Indian counter‑terror operations in recent history, deep strikes within enemy territory, extensive use of indigenous systems, and rapid execution over mere days.
