The 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage commenced today at the historic Red Fort in New Delhi. This year, India has nominated Diwali for inscription on UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage list. The nomination, previously examined by independent evaluation bodies, will be taken up for detailed discussion during the session, with hopes for a favourable outcome.

The six-day gathering will deliberate on new nominations from member states, review the status of previously inscribed elements, and consider requests for international assistance to protect and promote intangible cultural heritage worldwide. The event also marks a moment of pride as Indian cities Hyderabad and Lucknow have recently been honoured as UNESCO Cities of Gastronomy, reflecting the country’s rich culinary traditions.
