India begins real-world trials of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle for green mobility

India has initiated a major step toward clean mobility with the launch of a pilot project to test Toyota’s Mirai hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) under real-world Indian conditions. As part of the initiative, Toyota Kirloskar Motor handed over the Mirai FCEV to the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), which will conduct a two-year performance assessment across diverse terrains, climatic conditions, and traffic scenarios in the country.

The insights gained from these field trials will support future policymaking, industrial planning, and adoption strategies for hydrogen-based transport. The Toyota Mirai, a second-generation FCEV, produces electricity through a hydrogen–oxygen reaction, emits only water vapour, offers a driving range of around 650 km, and can be refuelled in less than five minutes.
